# The Potential of the Holy Name

The entire episode of Ajamila is meant to highlight the potentiality of the holy name: *“While suffering at the time of death, Ajamila chanted the holy name of the Lord, and although the chanting was directed toward his son, he nevertheless returned home, back to Godhead. Therefore if one faithfully and inoffensively chants the holy name of the Lord, where is the doubt that he will return to Godhead?”*[ (SB 6.2.49) ](https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/6/2/49/)

Despite all his flaws, the holy name delivered the wayward brahmana. Ajamila chanted but lived a sinful life. Now let us consider what benefit awaits a sinless chanter of the holy name. Ajamila chanted in the final moments of his life. Now imagine the benefit awaiting someone who chants throughout their life. Ajamila chanted to indicate his son. Now think of what happens if one chants in genuine God consciousness. Ajamila chanted without full faith. What, then, awaits the faithful chanter?
